As an active chamber musician, Johnny is a founding member of the award-winning Amethyst Quartet. Amethyst was the first saxophone quartet in history to sweep the nation’s most prestigious chamber music competitions, winning first prizes at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, the Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition, and the Music Teachers National Association Chamber Music Competition (MTNA), all in the same year. As an active orchestral saxophonist, he has performed with many orchestras, most recently the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra, the Rockford Symphony Orchestra, and the Evanston Symphony Orchestra.
Reuniting with his alma mater, Johnny performed as the featured soloist at the 2007 Texas Music Educators Association Clinic (TMEA) with the Langham Creek High School Symphonic Band from Houston, Texas. In May 2007, Johnny was a featured soloist at the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theatre as part of the Conservatory Project. Johnny has also won numerous individual awards including the International Frank Huntington Beebe Fund (2006), the Hellam Young Artist Competition (2005), and the Andreas Makris Woodwind Competition (2004). Johnny had the privilege to study with world renowned saxophonists including Jean-Yves Fourmeau, Jean-Denis Michat, and Christian Wirth. Johnny’s primary teachers include Dr. Frederick L. Hemke, Dr. Karen Wylie, and Jason Bird.
